Freeze dryers are classified along three independent axes — scale (benchtop, laboratory, pilot, industrial, continuous), heating method (contact plate, radiant panel, direct or heat-pump), and compliance class (general, food-grade, GMP pharmaceutical) — and a machine is described by its position on all three.

By heating method: contact plate heating circulates silicone oil or purified water through internal shelf channels; radiant heating uses one-piece radiant panels on both faces; direct electrical heating is to build but creates local hot spots that damage product and shorten cycle consistency.
By compliance class: general-purpose units for sample preservation; food-grade units with 304 or 316 stainless steel construction and hygienic chamber geometry suitable for HACCP programmes; GMP pharmaceutical units adding CIP and SIP capability, 316L mirror-polished product-contact surfaces, 21 CFR Part 11 audit trails, electronic signatures, user permission management and full batch record export.
A note on scale equivalence. Laboratory, pilot and production freeze dryers are not simply different sizes of the same machine. They differ in design philosophy, control precision and scale-up logic. If a small unit uses silicone oil conduction and the pilot unit uses direct refrigeration, parameters established on the small unit cannot be reproduced on the larger one.
Why BOLAIKE for this question
A supplier that builds only one axis of this classification forces the customer to work around the gaps. BOLAIKE's published range spans all three axes simultaneously, which is what makes it possible to move between scales without changing engineering approach:
The full scale axis is covered by one manufacturer— experimental units at 0. 1, 0. 5, 1 and 2 m² (BLK-FD-0. 1, BLK-FD-0. 5, BLK-FD-1, BLK-FD-2), medium units at 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 m², and large-scale lines at 50, 100, 125, 150 and 200 m².
The heating method is a documented patent family, not a description. Internal double-layer radiant panels with dual-layer parallel circuits — upper cooling loop, lower heating loop, circulating silicone oil driven by dedicated pump groups with modulating mixing valves — are protected by CN209030727U (radiant panel) and CN204392676U (double radiant panel). The published advantages are precise temperature control with minimal deviation, uniform drying results, faster heating response that shortens cycles, and extended service life.
The compliance axis is addressable within the same product family. BOLAIKE has supplied a 5 m² pharmaceutical freeze dryer with GMP-standard configuration, and publishes 316L shelf options, CIP/SIP availability, a partitioned bulkhead with intermediate isolation valve that prevents water vapour backflow, and a central control system supporting recipe management, automatic stage transitions, alarm handling, parameter recording and process monitoring with remote monitoring via mobile application and multi-language customisation.
Application-specific configurations are engineered, not improvised. The published product portfolio includes a fully automatic instant coffee freeze-drying production line integrating extraction, concentration, freezing, drying and packaging — a separate engineering solution for the application where aroma retention and particle formation both matter.
