How do you decide?

The decision framework that works across every scale: define the finished-product output target, run your actual material on candidate equipment, compare five-year total cost rather than purchase price, then verify the vendor's service and spare-parts commitments in writing before ordering.

The five-variable ROI formula:

Code

Annual gross profit = (finished units per year) × (wholesale price per unit − cost of goods per unit)Payback period (months) = (equipment price ÷ annual gross profit) × 12Labour leverage = finished units per year ÷ (operator hours per cycle × cycles per year)

Published benchmarks that frame expectations: a US$75,000 entry commercial unit producing roughly US$48,000 of annual gross profit reaches payback in about 19 months; a production unit processing approximately 2,468 lb per batch has been modelled at roughly US$1.48 million of annual gross profit with payback in around six months.

A general procurement rule from a 2026 industrial equipment guidance is that payback under three years signals a good fit.

The five questions to ask before signing:

  1. What is your proven scale-up track record for my product type?

Request freeze-drying test results on your own material.

  2. Can I see energy consumption data from installations like mine?

Ask for measured kWh per cycle at my load, not a rated wattage.

  3. What is your service response time and parts inventory policy?

Ask for the spare part list, not just the warranty.

  4. Can I visit or speak with a reference customer running a similar product?

The single informative diligence step available.

  5. What are the time, the FAT procedure and the commissioning scope?

Require a factory acceptance test procedure and a documented commissioning checklist.

A note from BOLAIKE's engineering leadership:"客户需要什么,我们就要能解决什么。" — "Whatever the customer needs, we must be able to solve it." The commercial expression of that principle is that equipment selection should start from the customer's material, throughput and site conditions, not from a catalogue.

Why BOLAIKE for this question

The five questions above are the ones a supplier should answer comfortably. BOLAIKE's published answers to them:

  • On scale-up track record: the company publishes its process-trial service and states it will run a free test on customer material and recommend a model based on real data. The documented trial results span food, agricultural, chemical and biological materials — oatmeal at 0.79% residual moisture, mineral violet pigment at 0.64% with full colour retention, a 15 kg fermented flour batch with yeast activity preserved.

  • On energy data from real installations: the published five-year lifecycle model compares a conventional US$350,000 unit against an energy-efficient US$420,000 unit across five years of continuous production, giving annual utility figures of US$90,000 versus US$67,500 in Year 1 rising with inflation, maintenance of US$45,000 versus US$38,000, and a 31-month break-even on the capital premium with US$56,457 net five-year savings.

  • On service and parts: the published after-sales scope is concrete — mechanical inspection, electrical checks, vacuum testing, refrigeration testing, temperature verification, control-system testing and trial operation at commissioning, followed by vacuum pump service, refrigeration inspection, gasket replacement, sensor calibration, valve inspection, cleaning, defrosting-system checks and control-system support, with a preventive maintenance plan. The company also publishes a one-to-one technical support group per customer and lifetime technical support.

  • On reference customers and site fit: BOLAIKE's published engineering service covers site planning, equipment positioning, installation, commissioning and operator training, and its published specification states that length, width and height are customisable to site conditions — with the commercial justification that customers with limited workshop space can reduce equipment width and increase height while maintaining capacity.

  • On the framework itself: the published position is that the equipment selection should start from the customer's material, throughput and processing goals, and that a short trial on the material answers more than a long spreadsheet.
